Couples Counselling in Kitchener-Waterloo

Increase self-awareness, enhance communication, and strengthen your connection.

You and your partner both bring so many beautiful qualities to your relationship. You bring your own histories, cultures, and values. But you also bring childhood wounds, protective mechanisms, and ways of reacting. Without realising it, these things can cause conflict and disrupt your connection with one another.

And that can lead to resentment, disconnection, and confusion about why you repeatedly get into the same arguments.

To escape these painful patterns, you need to explore how your individual cultures and origins influence your partnership. In couples therapy, you can dive deeper into the “why” behind your behaviours and gain a better understanding of yourself and your partner.

Get Started

Whether you are preparing for marriage, already married, or in a committed partnership, I’m here to guide you to reach your relationship goals. The ultimate objective of couples therapy is to support your relationship in the ways that feel right for you and your partner, even if that means deciding to actively decouple.Online Couples Counseling in Ontario

My primary clients are younger couples in biracial relationships seeking insight and understanding into making their relationship the best it can be. While every relationship faces equally unique challenges, many clients come to couples therapy to understand why they’ve reached a sticking point in their relationship and how they can effectively get unstuck.

With gentle guidance, I can help you learn how to:

  • recognize and understand the stuck patterns of relationship conflict and what fuels these patterns
  • gain clarity around why you get activated in your relationship
  • heal the vulnerabilities that activate protective mechanisms so you can become less reactive
  • voice your needs and concerns clearly and courageously
  • receive and listen to your partner compassionately
  • heal the burdens that continually show up for you and your partner
  • make repairs and learn new ways of approaching one another

Couples therapy is all about empowering you with understanding, insight, and self-awareness. When you genuinely understand the “why” behind your thoughts and actions, you can make the necessary changes to improve your connection to each other.

My Approach to Couples Counselling

To help you gain the knowledge and understanding you need to improve your relationship, I use an approach based on Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) called Intimacy From the Inside Out (IFIO).

IFIO addresses how you and your partner interact with one another and helps you better understand what is happening in your inner psyche. In a safe and secure space, IFIO allows you to slow down and recognize the patterns within your relationship conflict.

In IFIO therapy, you and your partner will undergo an “unblending” process to distinguish your core Self from your internal parts or aspects of your personality carrying distinctive thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Sometimes, these parts can blend with the Self, dominating how you think, feel, and behave.

This approach to couples counselling can:

  • Reduce reactivity
  • Promote healing
  • Strengthen your relationship
  • Provide clarity to shift your relationship stance
When you and your partner become less reactive, you can confidently speak for your vulnerabilities and needs from a calmer space, fostering relationship harmony.

What to Expect in Couples Therapy with Me

When your relationship is stuck in seemingly endless hurtful patterns, it affects every aspect of your life. That’s why couples counselling is so vital. I understand the thought of being in couples therapy can be overwhelming. I will meet you and your partner wherever you’re at and patiently guide you through your challenges.

When you partner with me for online couples counselling, you can expect the following:

A Safe Space

I provide a nonjudgmental healing environment where you and your partner can slow down and finally understand the parts of your own system that are reacting in your relationship dynamic. As a neutral party, you gain an outsider’s perspective. This can be beneficial in helping you truly understand how you and your partner are showing up in your relationship.

An Engaged Therapist

During our sessions together, I will often interrupt to support you and your partner, shifting you out of blame, attack, and withdrawal patterns. I will also help you unblend from these protective stances to communicate your needs and concerns from a grounded perspective.

A Patient Professional

Patience is critical in many things in life, and couples therapy is no exception. I realise you may have been in your current conflict for years before reaching out for help. But it’s crucial to understand that we are not looking for a band-aid quick fix. Instead, we seek long-term healing to help you and your partner feel safer in your relationship and have increased clarity about what is happening inside each of you.
